oh my god… i feel like i should preface this review by saying i am obsessed with lisa jewell’s books and i believe she writes some of the best thriller books out there。 and, i thought the family upstairs was a good book, but maybe not her best。 but the family remains was one of her best books。 i honestly think it’s her best book yet。 i started this book at 5pm and it’s now 11pm, and i’ve finished this book basically in a single sitting。 everything about it was just insanely good。 the characters, oh my god… i feel like i should preface this review by saying i am obsessed with lisa jewell’s books and i believe she writes some of the best thriller books out there。 and, i thought the family upstairs was a good book, but maybe not her best。 but the family remains was one of her best books。 i honestly think it’s her best book yet。 i started this book at 5pm and it’s now 11pm, and i’ve finished this book basically in a single sitting。 everything about it was just insanely good。 the characters, the way they all connect, the plot itself。 i literally devoured the writing and was genuinely attatched to the characters - which, personally, i think is almost impossible to do in most mystery books。 but, in this case, the characters were so close to my heart。i just loved this book so much, and was so glad to find the ending wasn’t predictable at all。 and that last chapter… omg。 i truly loved this book and think it’s one of the best mystery books i have ever read。 。。。more
Rachel,
This claims to be a standalone but I found myself searching my mind for what happened in the 1st book the entire time I was reading this one。 Interesting addition to the story but I wasn’t engrossed like I had hoped。 I’m also still confused by Henry even with the multiple epilogues…

Lisa Waldrop Shattuck,
It is really rare that I enjoy a sequel as much as an original- even more rare that I find the sequel to be an improvement- but this novel was so much more engaging to me than The Family Upstairs。 I don’t know that I find it to be a stand alone as advertised, but I do know that it was worth reading the first one to get to read this one。
Toni,
Good sequel! Tied up loose ends well

1/5 This was the least thrilling book I have ever read in my life like I’m not even joking… I don’t think Lisa Jewell is for me sadly (as I just went to a book signing of hers tehe)。 I liked the first book more, but again these two books DID NOT read like thrillers AT ALL。 I don’t even want to write why I didn’t like this to save my own time, but just know I was super disappointed by this…
Katherine Strom,
3。5 - I read it fast and it kept me interested。 Despite the many reminders to the previous book, The Family Upstairs, I think, had I read this as a stand-alone as it's described, I would be confused in several parts。 After reaching the end, I still have questions。 And sometimes that is a good, thrilling tactic that makes us readers think and wonder and it makes the book last in your mind for days to weeks or more。 But my questions weren't like that。 I was just simply confused about a few things。 3。5 - I read it fast and it kept me interested。 Despite the many reminders to the previous book, The Family Upstairs, I think, had I read this as a stand-alone as it's described, I would be confused in several parts。 After reaching the end, I still have questions。 And sometimes that is a good, thrilling tactic that makes us readers think and wonder and it makes the book last in your mind for days to weeks or more。 But my questions weren't like that。 I was just simply confused about a few things。 I think in fact, that I will thumb through the original to see if a suspicion of mine is accurate。 There was also a contraction in the book at least once。I do thoroughly enjoy the author's writing。 I find myself underlining phrases and words I quite appreciate。The ending wrapped up quickly and was a little too happy-go-lucky, we're all happy now (with the exception of the Epilogue and I hope that was just a small, dark twist thrown in for fun and it doesn't mean there will be a third。) I did enjoy being in the psyches of certain characters。I was satisfied with the overall book and combined story lines, but I laid in bed after I read the last page, and I was like did anything new actually happen? We learned about Rachel and her tragic experiences, yes。 Phin's ending was very much lacking for me - I wanted there to be more intense。。。anything。 There are all damages and the end was just too fairytale-esque for me。 Summed up too nicely。Just my humble opinion。 But to sum up, I liked it and love her writing。 。。。more
Linda,
Perhaps I would have enjoyed this novel more if I had read the first book instead of starting with the sequel。 I’m sure the important points were repeated within the story but it seemed like I came late to the party。 I’m also not quite sure why the author decided to have the chapters jump back and forth in time; looking back, most the story could have been told chronologically and been a bit less confusing。 However, the author does have a great grip on writing suspense so the narrative kept my i Perhaps I would have enjoyed this novel more if I had read the first book instead of starting with the sequel。 I’m sure the important points were repeated within the story but it seemed like I came late to the party。 I’m also not quite sure why the author decided to have the chapters jump back and forth in time; looking back, most the story could have been told chronologically and been a bit less confusing。 However, the author does have a great grip on writing suspense so the narrative kept my interest and read quickly。Thanks to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster/Atria for the ARC to read and review。 。。。more

"I've come to accept our sins as survival strategies。"The above sums up the satisfying sequel The Family Remains by just as satisfying author Lisa Jewell。 Though this could be a stand alone I found listening and reading The Family Upstairs right before tackling The Family Remains to be like bingeing a really good popcorn eating TV mini series。In this detailed sequel we learn what happened to the children left behind from the horrors of The Family Upstairs。 As adults, Lucy, Phin, and Harry have t "I've come to accept our sins as survival strategies。"The above sums up the satisfying sequel The Family Remains by just as satisfying author Lisa Jewell。 Though this could be a stand alone I found listening and reading The Family Upstairs right before tackling The Family Remains to be like bingeing a really good popcorn eating TV mini series。In this detailed sequel we learn what happened to the children left behind from the horrors of The Family Upstairs。 As adults, Lucy, Phin, and Harry have to suffer the consequences of con man/cult leader David and as well as their own actions to escape the craziness of their home。In The Family Remains we understand their motivations behind some severely sinful acts but we also see the repercussions of their past and present decisions。Expertly performed by a full cast, Dominic Thorburn, Bea Holland, Josh Dylan, Eleanor Tomlinson, Thomas Judd, and Hugh Quarshie, both books make you care about if the family that remains can heal, forgive and still be a family。There are new characters to add to the cheating, lying, creepiness, stalking and murder。 The author definitely answers the questions of what ever happen to the family from that suicide murder 30 years ago but at the very end I loved that she kept the door open for this duology to become a trilogy with a wink to her readers and a bit of "what if" about the confusing sometimes psychotic Harry。 I hope we see what remains of him in the future。I received a free copy of this book/audiobook from the publishers via #netgalley for a fair and honest review。 All opinions are my own。*This Review Is For The Audiobook and Ebook。* 。。。more

I read The Family Upstairs and gave it 3 stars。 After starting this book I remembered why I gave The Family Upstairs a low rating。 It’s not the author’s writing, it’s her characters! There was one in the first book and one in this one that just sets me off。 I guess since it gets to me so much I should give these two books a higher rating, but I just can’t! Review originally published here: https://joyfulantidotes。com/2022/08/1。。。I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of The Family Remains for months now and it was certainly worth the wait。 As with The Family Upstairs, I was hooked and hung on every word。However, before I get into my full review of the book, I have to comment on it being a standalone novel。 Personally, I don’t think it was。 Or at least it could be but, if you haven’t read the first book, you do not get the full impact of the st Review originally published here: https://joyfulantidotes。com/2022/08/1。。。I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of The Family Remains for months now and it was certainly worth the wait。 As with The Family Upstairs, I was hooked and hung on every word。However, before I get into my full review of the book, I have to comment on it being a standalone novel。 Personally, I don’t think it was。 Or at least it could be but, if you haven’t read the first book, you do not get the full impact of the story of the characters。 While there was a new storyline to The Family Remains and different characters took the forefront, what I enjoyed most about it was that it neatly tied up everything from the first book。 The fact that this book is very character driven really emphasised the full circle that is complete from one book to the next。The deeper look into Harry’s character was the standout element of The Family Remains。 It showed just how troubled he is but also showed a new, unexpected side to him。 Of all the characters in the book, he is really the one who keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering what he is going to do next。In terms of storyline, Rachel and Michael’s relationship really stood out。 At first, I did wonder what was the point of delving into it。 However, it made a good side story and I was impressed how it tied into the overall story in the end。 Even more so than what we encounter with the Lamb family in this book, it is with Rachel and Michael that the author shows herself as the great dark thriller writer that she is。 。。。more

4 1/2 stars Full review to come。 I did not even realize I need a sequel to The Family Upstairs until Lisa Jewell wrote it and now I am like How did I live for 3 years without this sequel LOL I did not want this book to end。 Loved it!
Krisakarcher,
She’s done it again。 Excellent follow up to The Family Upstairs。 Definitely went in some directions I didn’t see coming。 My only complaint is that the stakes didn’t feel quite as high as the first book。 And since we already knew the backstory there wasn’t much to uncover。 4。5 rounded up。
Sylvia,
A neat and clean (almost unbelievably "perfect") sequel to The Family Upstairs。 Don't we all wish life could be so straightforward i。e。 the righteous shall prevail over evils? Melanie,
This was more of a 3。5 for me。 You have to read The Family Upstairs。 This is not a standalone。 It was not a thriller or really a mystery…it was more of “hey this is what happened to the characters all these years later from before”。 I won’t lie I really enjoyed finding out what happened to the Lamb family, but I could have done without it。
Danni Jackman,
Great follow on from the the family upstairs。 Absolutely loved the ending! Please do another book Lisa I need to know what happens to KD!
Sara Bell,
This book was an excellent sequel to The Family Upstairs。 I thought it tied up all of the loose ends quite nicely。 I thought I had the end figured out, but was pleasantly surprised in the outcome of Henry’s actions。 Until the end of course。 It makes you wonder about how his future will really pan out。

While it had its moment, this seemed to me like a completely unnecessary sequel to a perfectly fine standalone book。 Not sure of the purpose, other than a fanfiction-y desire to see how characters progressed past the original。
